The annual Waycross Community Wainwright Sausage blood drive is Monday, October 26, and blood donors with a yen for sausage dogs might make plans to attend.

“Every October for the past 12 years Wainwright has been giving away free pork sausage at our blood drives, which makes the October drive probably our best drive of the year, production-wise,” said Gary Griffin, one of the Waycross Area Blood Drive Volunteers. “People have told me that they circle the October drive on the calendar.”

The drive is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waycross Exchange Club Fairgrounds. Twenty lucky random donors will take home pork sausage.

“The generosity of Wainwright’s is much appreciated,” Griffin said. “Not only will blood donors have the chance at winning a two-pound pack of sausage, Wainwright’s is also forking over $800 for cash door prizes.

“One donor will take home $100. Many others will win $20 or $10. Plus, we’ll have gift cards from Captain Joe’s and Sanders Honey Co. on the door prize table."

The American Red Cross also will email each donor a free $10 Amazon e-gift card.

Adding to the fun of the season, donors are invited to dress up in Halloween costumes or wear their Georgia Bulldogs (or Florida Gators) football fan swag with the annual rivalry football game set for Saturday, October 31.

“The Red Cross continues to rate Waycross as the top blood drive in Georgia, and we’re proud of the distinction,” Griffin said. “However our numbers steadily continue to decrease. We’re constantly trying to recruit younger blood donors. If everyone just understood the importance of re-stocking the emergency blood supply, I don’t think there’d be a shortage or a crisis.”
