ALMA — Former State Representative Tommy Smith, who represented Brantley County for almost three decades, passed away last Thursday, October 15, at his residence near Alma. He was 75. A blueberry and tree farmer in Bacon County, Smith was first elected in 1978 and served a remarkable 16 terms in the Georgia House of Representatives until retiring in 2012. Smith served during the administration of six governors.

One of the last of the conservative, rural Democrats in the House, Smith switched parties to become a Republican in 2004.

He often campaigned in a patriotic-themed classic Chevrolet pick-up truck, which was a feature in countless parades in the area during his service in the House.

Smith was known for his public service to his constituents, making a point to speak to and shake hands with everyone present wherever he went.

During his years representing Brantley County, Smith helped secure funding for the construction of the Brantley County Library and helped with grant funding for improvements and upgrades to Nahunta’s water and sewer system.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home in Alma.
