Let the citizens decide if we want to have nuclear-powered data centers
Would it be unreasonable for our citizens to be given the chance to vote on the decision of whether Brantley County has Data Centers?
Current national polls are 70 percent against and 30 percent for data centers. If these numbers were for an election, it would be a major victory for the candidate with the 70% margin.
A SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) requires voter approval. This is a 1-cent tax.
We are currently looking at something with many environmental impacts. Our current ordinances include the addition of small modular reactors as a future power source.
Mike Turner of Loudoun County, Virginia told me there are currently 5 operational SMRS. These SMRS have passed their certification test and should be in production in four years.
Surely, we deserve the chance to decide on data centers for our county if a 1-cent SPLOST Tax requires voter approval.
Also, we don’t have any of our current county commissioners or Ronald Ham living in the area of the prosed data center.
I can state this with confidence they (data centers) come in bunches. In other words, other areas in the county are not immune to them!
