Former long-time State Rep. Tommy Smith passes at 75

Former State Representative Tommy Smith, who represented Pierce County for almost three decades, passed away last Thursday, Oct. 15, at his residence near Alma. He was 75.

A blueberry and tree farmer in Bacon County, Smith was first elected in 1978 and served a reamarkable 16 terms in the Georgia House of Representatives until retiring in 2012. Smith served during the administration of six governors. One of the last of the conservative, rural Democrats in the House, Smith switched parties to become a Republican in 2004.

Smith often campaigned in a patrioticthemed classic Chevrolet pick-up truck, which was a feature in countless parades in the area during his service in the House.

Smith was known for his public service to his constituents, making a point to speak to and shake hands with everyone present wherever he went.

Offerman Mayor Brenda Denison knew that first hand. Smith helped guide Offerman through its re-chartering as a city in 1996. Denison pointed out that Smith helped everyone.

Smith

“Pierce County lost a great friend. Tommy as a representative and friend helped a lot of people. He saw the needs in our communities because he was seen and heard in them. He never walked in a room, in a government building, restaurant or on the street that he did not go up and acknowledge everyone he saw. He was truly a people person. It's my opinion there will never be a truer politician or friend for the people as Tommy Smith.”

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home in Alma.
