Zaxby’s holds grand opening
Blackshear now officially has ‘the sauce’. The new Zaxby’s Restaurant, located at 2999 U.S. Highway 84 West in Blackshear, held its grand opening Monday, October 19. Shown above, owner Taylor Hawkins (center) with his Zaxby’s team members, cuts the ribbon.

Zaxby’s in Blackshear officially opened for business Monday to a line of people waiting in hopes of getting a coveted “deck of deals”. The lead up to the opening was filled with anticipation and a week of special days when locals could get a free taste of the menu.

The line began to form Sunday night and by 10:30 p.m. there were already approximately 20 people waiting on the sidewalk outside the new eatery. The mood was festive and the weather was chilly with a low of 49 degrees overnight. Many enjoyed the comforts of home, sitting in folding chairs and snuggled up in blankets. One group had a shop heater blowing warm air while they watched TV and listened to music.

Owner Taylor Hawkins was on hand to keep the eager line-holders company. “This is the fourth opening I’ve done like this,” said Hawkins. “I figure if they wait all night to support us, I can come out to support them.”

That support included playing a few games of cornhole in the soon to be busy drive through.
