This October, the Southeast Health District is joining communities across the nation in recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month by encouraging women to prioritize their health and learn about available breast cancer screening services.
Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in the United States. Early detection through appropriate screening can help identify breast cancer before symptoms develop, when treatment may be more effective.
Through the Georgia Department of Public Health, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) helps eligible Georgia women access important screening services, including clinical breast exams, pelvic exams, Pap tests and referrals for mammograms. The program is available yearround to qualifying Georgia residents, helping women access preventive care and identify potential health concerns as early as possible.
“Early detection is an important part of protecting women's health,” said Anna Wall, Women’s Health Coordinator for the Southeast Health District. “We want women throughout our communities to know that screening services are available and that cost or access to care should not prevent them from exploring their options.”
Women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer through the program, or referred by a physician, may qualify for treatment through the Women’s Health Medicaid program, depending on eligibility requirements.
