Tommy Ray Smith, 75, passed away peacefully October 15, 2026, at his residence.
He was a native of Bacon County, born December 15, 1950, to the late Jack Smith and Chloe Henriott Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Helen Smith; paternal grandparents, Julian and Kate Smith and maternal grandparents, Hilton and Edith Henriott.
He proudly served as a Georgia State Representative for 34 years, dedicating much of his life to serving the people of Georgia. Throughout his distinguished career, he was known for his leadership, dedication and commitment to making a difference in his community.
His strong work ethic began at an early age in Bacon County, where his grandfather planted peanuts for him to sell at the local tobacco warehouse. Those childhood experiences taught him the importance of hard work, building relationships, and earning the trust of others. He often credited those early lessons with helping prepare him for his political career.
Although he accomplished much during his years of public service, he never forgot his humble beginnings. He remained deeply connected to his family farm, his community and the people he proudly represented.
From a young boy selling peanuts to a respected leader under Georgia’s Gold Dome, his life was one of faith, dedication, and service. His lasting contributions and the many lives he touched will forever be remembered.
Throughout his life, he was blessed with the love, loyalty and unwavering friendship of a lifelong friend, Dianne Bennett, who stood faithfully by his side. Through life’s joys, challenges and difficult times, she was always there, offering encouragement, comfort and unconditional support. Her friendship was a true blessing, built on years of cherished memories, trust, and a bond that could never be broken. She remained a constant presence in his life, never wavering in her love, care, and dedication to him. Their special friendship was a beautiful reminder that some bonds go beyond words and last a lifetime. Her faithfulness and devotion will forever be a meaningful part of his story.
