Judge Kenny Johns (left photo) gives his views to his assistant on the current condition of a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air coupe while others look over a mid-1960s Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport sedan during Saturday’s Southern Forest World Vintage Car Show at the Okefenokee Fairgrounds. The show, which was a fundraiser for SFW, attracted a few dozen vintage cars and trucks for display and judging. The antique Johns is inspecting was a staple of families during the “Baby Boom” generation after World War II. The car carried a 302 cubic inch V-8 engine which was typical for Chevy and other car manufacturers of the time when gas was priced around 30 cents a gallon. Cost of the Bel Air when it was new averaged about $2,500 depending how it was equipped. Models in pristine condition today routinely sell for as much as $50,000 or more. Chevy began production of the Chevelle in 1963 as a mid-size family car, but its second generation models in the late ’60s and beyond became one of the “muscle” cars of the time, powered by a 396 cubic inch V-8.
