The local AMVETS chapter #1857 recently hosted a special meet and greet and fish fry in Blackshear City Park to welcome the first ever Ladies Auxiliary group. The new group is open to not just female veterans but also the wives and other female family members of veterans. The event was aimed to give back to the veteran community after a successful first year. The local chapter posted flags at the Blackshear City Cemetery and Shiloh Cemetery. Members served as guest speakers at several Veterans Day programs last year. Post members participated in the high school football teams’ Veterans Day ceremony and at the Pierce County Commission meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Washington’s outlook for the future is to strengthen community ties and improve AMVETS’ presence in the community.
