HOBOKEN — A technicality is forcing the City of Hoboken to revert back to a staggard schedule through the Hoboken Elementary School zone.

Police Chief Sammy Hendrix informed the Hoboken City Council of the situation during the Tuesday, October 6 monthly meeting.

“Blue Line Solutions can’t get their stuff together,” said Hendrix. “They contacted me today (October 6), and said we’ve got to go back to the hours that we originally had it.”

The reasoning, according to Hendrix, was because the City of Hoboken did not adopt a formal ordinance to maintain specific school zone speeds.

The city council approved a 25 mile per hour speed all day throughout the whole school zone while school was in session, which went into effect prior to school starting in August.

“I just thought about it,” Hendrix said of staying and getting an ordinance passed or reverting back to the staggard times. “I could ask you guys to pass an ordinance. I think we’ll just change it back to the two different times.”

Hendrix said the hours of enforcement for 25 mph will be from 7:15 a.m.-8:20 a.m., of a morning for the start of school and 2:25 p.m.–3:30 p.m., for the end of school.

In between 8:20 a.m. and 2:25 p.m. the speed will be the normal 30 mph speed limit again.

“Starting in 2027, we will have to order a new sign to put it out there where lights are fashioned,” said Hendrix. “Right now the lights are flashing all the time during school hours.”
