Waycross Police Department officers were at Ware County High School Monday afternoon in response to a phone call of a threatening nature received by school personnel, Chief Tommy Cox said in a news release.

At approximately 1:20 p.m. October 5, WPD personnel responded to the school for investigation of the call, which contained a threat toward the school.

Personnel searched the campus, but found no evidence associated with the reported threat, the release said.

After further investigation, officers determined there was no indication of an immediate threat to students or staff.

At approximately 3 p.m., students began to be released from the school. Emergency Medical Services personnel also were present at the school in response to medical conditions unrelated to the reported threat, the release said.

The investigation remains ongoing, Cox said.

WPD encourages anyone with information that may aid further investigation to contact the Community Automated Tip Line at (912) 287-2924. Callers may remain anonymous.

Multiple social media posts Monday afternoon indicated the high school, located at 700 Victory Drive, was on lockdown because of a bomb threat.
