TOWNSEND, Ga. — Eddie William Poppell, Jr., 45, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026, at his home.

Born in Jesup, Poppell lived in McIntosh County all of his life. He was a commerc ial shrimper, and was known as the “Oyster Man.” Poppell worked in dock construction and enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Darien Church of God.

Poppell was preceded in death by his mother-inlaw, Wanda Mobbs; grandparents, Nell Roberson, RueNell Thomas, Harry Thomas, and Vernon Poppell; uncle, Pete Poppell; and aunt, Barbara Thomas.

Survivors, all of whom are in Townsend, are his wife (and sweetheart since their teen years), Miranda Poppell; daughters, Savannah Poppell, Cameron Simmons (Chris), Amber Poppell, and Haylie English; sons, Eddie Taggart, III, Zachary Taggart, and Ryan Taggart; parents, Eddie Poppell, Sr. (Susan Davis), and Lottie Poppell (Ricky Mobbs); sister, Peri Poppell; brothers, Jacob Poppell (April) and Aiden Brown; grandchildren, Bella-Luna Marie Simmons, and one on the way; children of his heart, Josh Jenkins, Autumn Gault, and George Gore; several aunts and uncles; and special cousins, Heather Darby and Jessica Head.

A funeral service was held October 3 at Darien Church of God with Pastors Danny Stilwell, Tommy Whaley, and Hope Thomas officiating.

Pallbearers were Jacob Poppell, Justin Howard, Harry Thomas, Jr., Chris Simmons, Josh Jenkins, Charlie Darby, Debo Ginn, and Johnny Howard.

Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Howard, Eddie Taggart, Jr., Shea Howard, Chuckie Gault, and Larry Thomas.
