Smith Art winners selected

Top finishers in five categories have been chosen in the the 50th Annual Judge Ben Smith Juried Art Competition at the Okefenokee Heritage Center.

The competition is among the longest running programs at OHC. Contest events were graphics, drawing, 3D art, painting and photography.

Following are the top three finishers and honorable mention in each category.

Graphics: 1. “Couture” by Cathy Dee Janes; 2. “Shimmer” by Ariel Shulz; 3. “#1 of the Reflections Series” by Kelson Rohrer-Cuervo; HM “Church Lady #10” by Diane Brown.

Drawing: 1. “Morning Dash” by Madeline White; 2. “Vineyard Autumn” by White; 3. “Frog Tango” by Shulz; HM “Freedom” by Mary Kay LaFever.

3D Art: 1. “Segmented Vase” by Steve Sikes; 2. “Segmented Hollow Form” by Sikes; 3. “Two Jays” by John Jordan; HM “Lilly Pad” by Katie Holton.

Painting: 1. “Savannah” by Jorah Mitchell; 2. “Fire in the Sky” by Tommy Cox; 3. “Interior/Exterior” by Jerry Luke; HM “Lotus” by Xianagin Zhang.

Photography: 1. “Storming Across the Marsh” by Susan Lutz; 2. “Bridge Over Untroubled Waters” by Allen Allnoch; 3. “Frog on Zinia” by Wayne Morgan; HM “Sunflower With Visitor” by Larry Miller.

Judge Smith, over his long lifetime, was an art teacher, a practicing artist, and a promoter of the arts.

The art community that has developed in this region is in large part due to his life’s passion and work. The late judge, also a noted historian, will have his impact on the arts celebrated for years to come at OHC through the annual art contest and exhibit.
