Grace Episcopal’s Shary Dell Bell now part of hourly chorus in city
Dr. Oscar Dell recently presented a new bell to Grace Episcopal Church in Waycross for the vacant tower in the structure at the corner of Pendleton and Mary streets. Dr. Dell, better known as “Pat,” gave the bell to the church in memory of his late wife, Shary. SPECIAL PHOTOS

If you’re a member of the community who enjoys hearing our local churches chiming the hours, you’ve recently noticed another one has joined the chorus in Downtown Waycross.

This sound would be from the Shary Dell Bell at Grace Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Pendleton and Mary streets.

The bell was presented to the church by her husband, Dr. Oscar Dell, to honor their commitment to each other and their strong faith.

Dr. Dell and Shary were high school sweethearts at Brooks County High School. After graduation, they lost touch with each other, but reconnected later in life and were married 20 years before Shary Bell’s death in 2023.

“Every Sunday at church, Shary would ask me why we didn’t have a bell at Grace Episcopal, related Dr. Dell, a local chiropractor who’s better known as “Pat.” “After 103 years, I’m glad to say we finally do. I like to think sometimes that she can hear it in heaven, announcing the hours.”

The Shary Dell Memorial Bell was blessed and dedicated by the Rt. Rev. Frank Logue, Episcopal Bishop of Georgia, in a recent visit to the historic church.

“We’re very pleased with the Shary Dell Bell,” said the Rev. Donald Holland, priest at Grace Episcopal. “We look forward to hearing it through the years.”
