Staff members from Magnolia House and other community service organizations gathered with members of area law enforcement agencies and the public last week to begin Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Many of the 60 or so in attendance were wearing purple in honor of victims and survivors of domestic abuse during the annual ceremony Thursday, October 1, at the Plant Park Memorial Fountain. After a welcome from Magnolia House Executive Director Michelle Girtman, attendees placed flowers in the fountain, including (at right) Waycross Police Department Capt. Paul Crawford (top) and Patrol Officer Samara Perry. The event concluded with canisters sending purple smoke over the fountain. The Waycross observance was among those held nationwide as part of “Purple Thursday.”
