LUBBOCK, Tex. — Texas Tech quarterback Thomas Castellanos was declared ineligible Friday when the Kentucky Court of Appeals struck down a temporary restraining order that allowed some Class of 2022 athletes a fifth year of eligibility.
Castellanos, who has appeared in all four games for the Red Raiders, was one of 37 athletes listed in Kentucky Court of Appeals official documents. The temporary restraining order was originally granted August 21 for those players.
Ranging across multiple sports, the official ruling dissolved a temporary injunction that allowed a group of Class of 2022 athletes a fifth year of eligibility.
According to On3, attorney Ryan Downton said Tech is talking with compliance over Castellanos' eligibility. Tech athletics didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
'As long as he [Castellanos] did not have any professionalism issues, they should certify him as eligible under the NCAA Manual as it exists today,' Downton told On3.
Castellanos played his first season of college football in 2022 with UCF, followed by two seasons at Boston College and last season with Florida State.
Prior to his commitment to Tech, Castellanos worked out as a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans but was not signed to either team.
Castellanos has been an effective red zone threat for the Red Raiders during his limited appearances on the field. The Waycross, Ga., native has recorded 44 rushing yards, 35 passing yards, four total touchdowns and an interception.
The Red Raiders will play Colorado at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, with Castellanos' ability to participate in question. Tech will have a bye week the following week.
