Have you ever seen something so beautiful that, for a moment, you had no words? Maybe it was the ocean at sunrise or a clear night sky filled with stars. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” If what God made can leave us in awe, how much greater must the One who made it be?
We often speak of God’s glory in church, but what does that mean? His glory is the display of who He is: His holiness, power, wisdom, goodness, and mercy. God does not become glorious because we praise Him. We praise Him because He already is glorious.
As pastor of Southside Baptist Church in Waycross, I want to see the glory of God in our services. Churches can become very good at putting on a show, producing a polished program, and entertaining a crowd. There is nothing wrong with preparation or doing our best. But a service can be impressive while the people in it give little thought to the glory of God.
