No. 10 Lady Bears end season with nine straight wins

BEARVILLE — Pierce County closed out its regular season on a nine-match winning streak heading into the Region 3-AAA volleyball tournament.

The program honored five seniors Thursday, October 1, three who were part of the first Pierce County Middle School team in 2022. The group included Isabella Marx, Ansley Hutcheson and Heidi Hodges.

Daisy Thigpen joined her fellow classmates when they entered PCHS as freshmen the following season. Audrey Simmington transferred in during her junior year.

Following Thursday’s action, the seniors were honored with a light show highlighting them through the years.

The 10th-ranked regular season champion Lady Bears (26-10 overall, 7-0 region), who finished their first-ever perfect region run, will serve as the tournament host for the semifinals and finals scheduled for Saturday, October 10.

PCHS awaits the winner of eighth-seed Johnson (16)-fifth-seed Tattnall County (2-5)-fourth-seed Toombs County (3-4) matches in the semifinals at 10 a.m.

Region runner-up Islands (6-1) will face the winner of seventh-seed Beach (2-5)-sixth-seed Brantley County (2-5)third-seed Appling County (5-2) in the other 10 a.m., semifinal match.

The region championship match and consolation matches will be contested at noon Saturday.

The tournament tipped off Tuesday, October 6 with fifth-seed Tattnall County Hosting eighthseed Johnson-Savannah in a best of five match.

Sixth-seed Brantley County hosted seventhseed Beach. Both matches were scheduled for 6:30 p.m. starts.

The quarterfinals are slated for Thursday, October 8. Fourth-seed Toombs County will host the winner of Johnson-Tattnall County at 6 p.m., while third-seed Appling County gets the winner of the Brantley County-Beach matchup at home at 6:30 p.m.

PCHS closed out the season hosting West Laurens and Wayne County Tuesday, September 29, with Toombs County and Southeast Bulloch visiting Thursday, October 1 for Senior Night.

The Lady Bears quickly knocked off West Laurens in the opening with a straight set victory. No scores were reported.

Azalea Mobley led the way with seven kills. She was followed by Zayleigh Raithel’s six kills and Nylah Jackson’s three kills.

Daisy Thigpen led the team in assists with nine. Caroline Davis finished with seven with Ansley Hutcheson recording five.

 PCHS was able to hold off the challenge of the Lady Yellow Jackets to complete the sweep.

The Lady Bears used an eight-point surge midway through the first set en route to the victory.

Pierce County struggled with serves in the second set to fall setting up a deciding third set.

PCHS built a 9-5 lead, but was unable to finish out the match losing points on serves. The Lady Bears regrouped to hold on for the win.

Mollie Carter led the attack with nine kills. Marx and Mobley each recorded eight kills.

Pierce County easily defeated the Lady Bulldogs in straight sets to clinch the regular season title in the first match.
