Finding Refuge with horses

When Refuge began, a support group at Hooves to Freedom powered through the Generous Giving Campaign at Cord of 3 Counseling (CO3), our hope was to create a safe space where individuals could slow down, find connection, and experience the healing that comes through community, reflection and the presence of God.

One participant walked with us through all six weeks of Refuge, showing courage and openness as she engaged in each opportunity for growth. Throughout the program, she experienced the power of grounding, the comfort of being supported by others and the reminder that she was never meant to walk through life’s challenges alone.

Refuge became a place where she could pause and reflect, explore what a healthy community looks like and recognize the work of the Holy Spirit in her journey. Through moments of quiet reflection, meaningful conversations and even movement through Tai Chi paired with worship music, she discovered new ways to connect her mind, body and faith.

A special part of her journey was her partnership with Sandy, one of our incredible therapy horses. Sandy was an amazing fit for her, offering a gentle presence that invited her to slow down and be fully present. Together, they experienced the simple but powerful practices of pausing, breathing, and reflecting. Through that partnership, she was able to experience the unique healing that comes when humans and horses meet in a space of trust and connection.

At the end of Refuge, she shared that she felt grounded, supported, and encouraged. Her story is a beautiful reminder that healing often happens in the small moments, a deep breath, a quiet pause, a compassionate connection, and the assurance that God is near.

This is why Cord of 3 and Hooves to Freedom continue to create spaces like Refuge-to provide opportunities for people to find hope, experience belonging and discover they do not have to walk their journey alone.

Through the 2026 Generous Giving Campaign. CO3 raised $16,165 to offer caregivers and families as they support their children with disabilities.
