Lady Herons win two of three, honor six seniors

Brantley County honored its six senior members at the end of a three-game work slate, which included a sweep of Region 3-AAA member Tattnall County.

The senior class includes Lydia Anderson, Rilee Story, Sydnee Davis, Madison Walker, Kynslea Garrison and Mary Hall. They were recognized prior to the Thursday, October 1 tilt with visiting Tattnall County.

The Lady Herons (11-7 overall, 5-4 region) opened the week falling 31 in Kingsland to Camden County (14-10), winners of six straight. Brantley County won the August 29 meeting 9-2 at home.

BCHS followed with “mercy rule” wins against Tattnall County (7-15, 28), losers in eight of its last 10 games. The Lady Herons rolled to a 14-1 victory in four innings Tuesday, September 29 outside Reidsville. They followed with a five-inning, 10-2 decision Thursday on Senior Night.

Brantley County was scheduled to play a doubleheader Monday, October 5 at Bacon County. The Lady Herons are hosting Pierce County Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m., in the regular season finale.

KINGSLAND — Camden County scored twice in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie en route to the victory over the Lady Herons.

Mary Hall (6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) tossed a complete game needing just 83 pitches to go the distance. Her Lady Wildkitten counterpart twirled a 7-inning, complete game three-hitter fanning nine. She needed just 81 pitches.

Brantley County left two base runners on base through five innings. Caiden Jones (1-or-3) led off the second with a single with Story (1-for-3) lining a leadoff single in the fourth.

After stranding just one base runner through four innings on a second inning single, Camden County broke through in the home half of the fifth.

A single, error and walk loaded the bases with nobody out. A first-pitch, sacrifice fly broke the ice. An ensuing fielder’s choice groundout gave the Lady Wildkittens a 2-0 lead.

The padded the margin with a run in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff walk was followed by consecutive singles driving home a run for a 3-0 advantage.

Davis (1-for-3) spoiled the shutout bid with a one-out, solo blast to leftcenter in the seventh. Jones followed two pitches later reaching on an error. Two routine fly ball outs ended the threat.

REIDSVILLE — A fiverun first inning was more than enough run support for Edie Lowther.

The right-hander scattered five hits over four innings. She fanned five, walked one and uncorked a wild pitch.

Story (1-for-2) set up the inning getting hit by a one-out pitch starting a stretch of seven consecutive batters reaching. Addisyn Grafford’s (2-for-2) ensuing single was followed by a walk to Davis loading the bases.

Jones (2-for-2) drew a walk forcing home Story with the first run. Walker (1-for-2) lined a two-run single for a 3-0 lead one pitch laster.

After Halli Knox was inserted as Walker’s courtesy runner, both runners moved up on a passed ball. Kynli Flowers (1-for-2) dropped a run-scoring single into center extending the lead to 4-0.

Lowther (1-for-2) followed with a run-scoring single to left. Tattnall County ended the threat turning a double play once the ball returned to the infield.

The Lady Warriors plated a run in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, run-scoring triple to pull to within 5-1.

BCHS answered with three runs in the second to extend the lead to 8-1. Anderson (1-for-3) lined a one-out single, stole second and raced home after tagging up and moving to third. She scored on an error on the throw back to the infield.

After a walk to Grafford, Davis was hit by the next offering. Jones singled home Grafford with Davis scoring two pitches later on a wild pitch for the seven-run lead Lowther stranded two in the bottom of the second and two in the third striking out the next three batters after surrendering a leadoff double and a single to start the inning.

Brantley County put the game away in the fourth plating six runs to open up a 14-1 lead.

Anderson led off the fourth with a base hit and raced to third on Story’s single to right. Grafford followed suit with a runscoring single to right with Story advancing to third.

Following a walk to Davis loading the bases, a Jones single and a miscue in the outfield scored all three runners upping the margin to 12-1. A walk to Walker (1-for-2) was followed by Palmer Woods insertion as a courtesy runner.

Two batters later, Jones scored on an error with Woods advancing to third. Woods scored on Hall’s groundout.

CANEY BAY — Brantley County scored at least two runs in four straight innings ending the game with a three-run fifth.

The Lady Herons, after stranding Story (4-for-4) and Grafford (1-for-2) in the first inning, broke through in the second doing all the damage after two outs and nobody on base.

Garrison (1-for-1) kept the inning alive with a two-out walk. She scored on Hall’s (2-for-3) double two pitches later. Knox, courtesy running for Hall, moved over to third on Anderson’s bunt single.

Following Anderson taking second on defensive indifference, Story lined a two-run single to left plating both runners for a 3-0 lead.

Tattnall County got one run back in the top of the third on a one-out single.

The Lady Herons followed with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 advantage.

Jones (1-for-2) ripped a one-out, solo homer for the first run. Walker (1for-3) singled and was removed for Woods. Flowers reached when her sacrifice bunt was bobbled.

Flowers moved to second on a two-out wild pitch and scored on Garrison’s single to center for a 5-1 lead.

The Lady Warriors cut the margin to 5-2 with a run in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring single.

BCHS came right back with two in the home half of the fourth increasing the lead to 7-2. Anderson (3-for-4) led off with a solo homer to left.

A single by story and a four-pitch walk to Grafford followed. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Jones’ one-out sacrifice fly to right drove home Story for the five run advantage.

Brantley County’s first five batters reached in the bottom of the fifth with three scoring to end the game.

Flowers (1-for-2) singled with Garrison following with a four-pitch walk. After Hall delivered a base hit with the first out recorded at the plate, Anderson doubled scoring two extending the lead to 9-2. Story followed with a double ending the game via the “eight-run mercy rule.”
