Two Ware County High School staff members recently were named Golden Achievement Award winners.
Lauren Cox was recipient of the honor for certified personnel while Katrina McMillan earned the citation for classified staffers. The two were recognized September 15 at the Ware County Board of Education meeting and presented by WCHS Principal Dr. Julie Augustine.
“When I think about what exceptional co-teaching and special education support should look like,” said Dr. Augustine, “I think of Mrs. Cox. She is truly a model for all of us. When I walk into her classroom, I see someone who knows her students. She knows who needs encouragement, additional support, and to be pushed just a little further.
“She meets students where they are while never lowering the bar for where they can go. She holds them to high standards because she genuinely believes in what they are capable of achieving.
“She is also an incredible co-teaching partner. In their classroom, you don’t see a general education teacher and a special education teacher. You simply see two teachers, equally invested in every child in the room. That is what true inclusion should look like.
“Mrs. Cox makes students better, her colleagues better, and our school better. She is someone we can all learn from.”
McMillan serves as nurse for WCHS. “There are certain people in a school who quietly make a difference every single day,” said Dr. Augustine. “Nurse Katrina is one of those people. She has an incredible heart for our students and consistently goes above and beyond to make sure they feel safe, cared for and supported.
“Whether she is caring for a sick child, reassuring a worried parent, supporting a staff member or simply offering the comfort a student needs in that moment, she leads with compassion, patience and kindness. She sees the whole child, and our students know they can count on her.
“Her commitment to our students and her heart for service make our school a better place.”
