Crews
BLACKSHEAR — Mrs. Katie Mae Dowling Crews, 93 of Blackshear, passed away Friday night, September 18, 2026, at Harborview Pierce County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Crews was born April 25, 1933 in Jacksonville, Fla., to Arthur and Mittie Dowling. The family later moved and made their home in Georgia, where she would spend most of her life.
Mrs. Crews graduated from Wacona High School in 1952. Two years later, in 1954, she married J. Flois Crews, whom she would spend the next 28 years with before his passing in 1982, building a life and family of their own.
Together, they welcomed one child, a daughter, Janice. The family moved to California where Mrs. Crews worked for the Walker Scott Company. After four years, the family returned to Georgia, where Mrs. Crews devoted herself to her family as a homemaker.
However, when an opportunity arose at Memorial Hospital in Waycross, she returned to the workforce and began a rewarding career, beginning at the hospital switchboard and continuing to admissions and cashier, that would span more than 32 years. Mrs. Crews’ dedication and work ethic remained hallmarks of her life.
She found joy in caring for her plants in her greenhouse and spending time outdoors. These simple pleasures reflected her appreciation for nature and the beauty found in everyday life.
Mrs. Crews’s life was defined by family, commitment, and perseverance. Through raising her family and serving her community, she leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories, and a story that will continue through those who loved her. Mrs. Crews was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Crews was preceded in death by her siblings, Randall Dowling, Robert Dowling, Tom Dowling, Leroy Thrift, Maggie Bohannon, Louise Mitchell, Jeanice Lynn and Estelle Dinkins.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Kenny Dasher of Blackshear; three sisters, Kathryn Altman of Hoboken, Latrelle Kozar of Little Rock, Ark., and Sybil Muise of Waycross; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Jones, Alan Dasher, Amber (Steve) Landry, Ellen (Kolby) Herrin and Thomas Lee; nine great grandchildren, Gabriel, Nathan and Katie Jane Jones; Selah, Luke, Alex, and James Landry; and Karder and Kamden Herrin; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A private graveside service for family and friends was held Monday morning, September 21, 2026 at High Bluff Cemetery.
