HORTENSE — Herschel Martin Johnson, 81 of Hortense, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at his residence.
Johnson was born May 18, 1945, in Baxley to Henry Peck Johnson and Jessie Mae Turner Johnson. He had lived most of his life on St. Simons Island,
moving to Hortense in 2023.
Johnson was employed by Sea Island Company for 60 years, working most of those years as head electrician in the Engineering Department and later with Laundry Services.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings; Betty Giddens, Dorothy, Henry Johnson, Sue Norris and Howard Johnson.
Survivors include his children, Kristine J. Brenner (Beau) of Hortense, Cynda Schaffer (Jacob) of Defuniak Springs, Fla., Barbara McDonald (Ted) of St. Simons Island and James Randy Smith (Susan) of Brunswick; grandchildren, Megan Wells (Joshua), Hunter Brenner, Jessy Carroll (Matt), Ahley Lane and Cody Schaffer; a brotherin- law, Lonnie Norris; sisters- in-law, JoAnn Johnson and Rachel Johnson; numerous other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 1 p.m., at The Chapman Event Center, 6045 Golden Isles Pkwy, Brunswick, GA 31525, with Pastor Daryl Joiner officiating.
Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory were in charge of arrangements.
