Special to the WJH The Satilla Riverkeeper will hold its annual “Roastin' with the Riverkeeper” oyster feast from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, October 24, at the Dover Bluff Club, 177 Dover Drive in Waverly.
The evening features fresh oysters, barbecue, open bar, and live music while supporting protection and preservation of the Satilla River. Tickets are $60 and may be purchased at satillariverkeeper.org.
Payments by check can be mailed to Satilla Riverkeeper, 5700 Swamp Park Road, Waycross, 31503.
This year’s event also celebrates the significant achievement by the Riverkeeper, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Dover Bluff Club, who led an effort to close Noyes Cut.
Noyes Cut is one of many man-made slices through the salt marshes of South Georgia over the past 100 years to aid industry in navigating to the coastal shipping lanes and lumber mills. The cuts caused alterations in the topography of the waterways and led to diminished biodiversity and wildlife habitats, opponents to the cuts say.
Opening Noyes Cut has the potential to increase access to waterways for recreational use and help restore fish and bird populations, they said.
