Everyone over a certain age will always remember where they were and how they felt on September 11, 2001, but Better Hometown Blackshear and Main Street Manager Bethany Strickland organized this year’s Sept. 12 celebration in the hope that people will remember how special our community is and how everyone felt the day after, when the nation pulled together in the wake of tragedy.
That spirit of unity was the inspiration for last Saturday’s “9-12 in the 912” celebration.
Local residents were encouraged to dress in patriotic costumes and to decorate their golf carts and bicycles with stars and stripes for the small but lively parade from First Baptist Church to Blackshear City Park with the Pierce County High School Sound of Silver marching band leading the way.
Following the parade there was music: the National Anthem by the Sound of Silver, God Bless America on bagpipes by Paul Guilbeau, and several lively jazz numbers and even popular favorites by Chicago and Bruno Mars courtesy of the Satilla River Jazz Band.
A keynote address was given by veteran and Pastor Rodney Thrift of Destination Church in Blackshear, Strickland then gave a speech followed by the official unveiling of the community flag mural, a composite piece of artwork assembled from approximately 1,200 different 4”x4” canvases to create a giant flag.
