Okefenokee Field Day will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, October 10. The free family-friendly gathering celebrates 80 years of the park’s efforts to inspire curiosity and wonder in the largest blackwater wetland in North America. The Okefenokee is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the first one ever in Georgia.
For 80 years, Okefenokee Swamp Park has been welcoming visitors. The mission of the Park is to foster a deep connection with nature and conserve its ecological health through stewardship, education, and outdoor recreation in and around the Okefenokee. Field Day is a special celebration and an opportunity to learn more about why the Okefenokee, a nearly halfmillion-acre blackwater swamp recognized as a Wetland of International Importance and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is more than a destination. It is an immersion into the ancient past, a living classroom and a sanctuary for rare wildlife.
The 80th Celebration Field Day is a family-friendly event that includes guided walks, wildlife education, hands-on learning, prescribed fire education, swamp history displays, traditional crafts and skills and, of course, there will be alligators.
The park is located at 5700 Okefenokee Swamp Park Road, Waycross.
