CANEY BAY – Brantley County’s first-year head coach Matt Hickox says this week’s open date is coming at a great time.
The Herons (1-2) have been playing since August 7 starting with back-to-back jamborees and three regular season games. Starting back September 18, BCHS moves into Region 3-AAA play with four games leading into a final break before the final two games.
Brantley County opens region play hosting currently unbeaten Islands (3-0) September 18. That is followed by a trip to current fourthranked Appling County (2-0) September 25, a November 2 invasion by top-ranked Toombs County (3-0) and a November 9 trip to Savannah to face Johnson.
“We’re (coaches) going to be doing a lot of self-evaluation and a lot of correcting this week,” said Hickox. “We’ve got to figure out how we can stop beating ourselves. Hopefully we can figure out how to kill that monster.”
The open date also gives the players a time to heal up from the grind of the season and those injured time to headline.
“We’ve got to get more players ready to play,” Hickox added. “We’ve got a lot of sophomores playing in big roles. It’s going to be another three weeks before we get Clark (Carter) back from a broken thumb. We had two quarterbacks entering the season with Carter and J.T. (Johns) and now we’re down to one.”
Another who could help is freshman Blane Smith.
“He is very athletic,” said Hickox of Smith. “We’ve got to get him more involved and use his athletic ability out on the field. I don’t need him standing on the sideline by me.”
