Additions of classrooms and bathrooms at Pierce County Middle School and Patterson Elementary are making good progress.
Board of Education Facilities Director Harbin Farr gave an update on construction for both projects at last Thursday’s school board work session.
R.H. Tyson Construction of Blackshear is the construction manager for the project with a guaranteed maximum price of $5,065,193.83.
Farr said the sixth grade addition is the furthest advanced, but the foundation is in place and block work has also begun on the seventh and eighth grade wings.
“We are moving faster on the sixth grade wing because we would like for it to be completed first because more activity happens on that end of campus,” Farr said.
Farr also complimented Tyson construction for matching the brick for the new addition to the original brick used in construction at PCMS in 1995.
“It is a different brick company, but it matches almost perfectly, even after 31 years,” he said.
Work at Patterson is about a month behind schedule due to unanticipated drainage and soil issues which had to be addressed before work could begin.
Farr said site work for the foundation is underway and the foundation should be poured in the next week or so.
“Tyson says they anticipate they can catch up the project and won’t be behind once they get to work,” he said.
Farr said both projects are anticipated to be completed by spring break, 2027.
Farr said the project has a $100,000 total contingency built in. The Patterson issues overran the $50,000 in contingency for the project there, but the system will draft from the POMS contingency to fill the gap. The drainage and soil issues cost about $66,000.
New construction at the middle school will include three new classrooms and three sets of male and female bathrooms that will be added at the end of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade wings. Storage space will also be included.
The work at Patterson includes construction of four new classrooms and bathrooms. A conference room and storage space will also be included. The new addition will be built at the rear of the campus and will take up some of the parking there.
The projects are being financed by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST).
