Lady Bears split four matches

Pierce County’s volleyball Lady Bears split a pair of road matches with dates in Dexter and Savannah.

The Lady Bears (12-7), winners in 11 of their last 14 matches, swept host Class 4A West Laurens winning 25-21 and 25-17 Tuesday, September 1. PCHS fell to Class 6A fifth-ranked Veterans 2517 and 25-18.

Pierce County rallied from a set down Thursday, September 3 to beat host Islands in a Region 3-AAA matchup posting a 19-25, 27-25, 15-7 victory over the Lady Sharks. Class 6A South Effingham overpowered the Lady Bears with a 25-14, 25-14 sweep.

PCHS travels to Kingsland today (Wednesday, September 9) to face Camden County and Yulee (FL). The Lady Bears host region foe Appling County and Frederica Academy Thursday, September 1o on Rec Night.

Pierce County travels Tuesday, September 15 to St. Simons Island to meet Frederica Academy and goes Thursday, September 17 to Caney Bay to face Brantley County in a region matchup and Long County.

Lady Bears........25-25 West Laurens ....21-17 DEXTER — Playing short-handed due to injuries to seniors Ansley Hutcheson and Heidi Hodges, the Lady Bears controlled the match against West Laurens.

Junior Caroline Davis stepped into the setters role contributing eight assists for kills. Senior Daisy Thigpen manned the other setter position finishing with 11 assists.

The offense was very well balanced led by Isabella Marx with seven kills and Azalea Mobley with five kills.

Veterans...........25-25 Lady Bears ........17-18

DEXTER — State-ranked Veterans capitalized on its size advantage and speed to turn back PCHS in the nightcap.

Aly Yeomans, Mollie Carter, Marx and Mobley, lead the team with attacks. Thigpen led in assists.

Lady Bears ...19-25-15 Islands...........25-25-7

SAVANNAH — The Lady Bears picked up a key region statement win with the three-set victory.

The Lady Sharks used a seven-point run in the first set to take control to win. The second set was a nip-andtuck affair. PCHS scored the final three points on a service error, a Mollie Carter cross-court kill for the lead with the final point coming at the end of a long rally.

The Lady Bears scored the first six points in the decisive third set en route to the victory.

S. Effingham.....25-25 Lady Bears ........14-14

SAVANNAH — South Effingham’s size and speed were too much for a tired Lady Bears squad in the final.
