The Bible says:
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
— Revelation 3: 20
When someone knocks on the door of our house we know they are hoping someone on the inside will answer the door and let them in. They may call out and let us know who’s doing the knocking.
The door to our house is the entrance to our private life. If we let someone in our home, they see how we’ve arranged our home to reflect our personal taste.
People knock on our door because they hope to be invited into our home and speak with us face to face. If they’ve knocked several times and received no response they’ll leave and may not come again, especially if they know we were home when they knocked.
There is a door to our inner self. It’s our heart we open to allow things in.
We open our heart to those who are dear to us. They can’t actually come inside, but they know everything about us in ways no one else does.
In our text, Jesus is pictured as knocking on the door of our heart and calling out for us to let Him in. He wants to fellowship with us and speak with us face to face.
He doesn’t come for a visit, but to be a permanent resident. And when He comes in, He’ll bring deliverance from sin, light, joy, love, and peace that passeth all understanding.
We may feel Jesus knocking and calling for us to open our heart and invite Him in when we hear the message of salvation. We should answer the door immediately, and open up at His knock and receive His mercy, forgiveness, salvation, Spirit, and eternal life.
If we don’t answer the door when Jesus knocks, He may not come again and we then will be eternally lost, because it’s God who brings us to this encounter with Jesus.
(John 6: 44)
Jesus went to His own people the Jews, but they did not receive Him. Today, He is calling all men to repentance and salvation, (John 3: 16; Acts 17: 30; 2 Peter 3: 9) and those who answer His knock and receive Him are born again.
(John 1: 11, 12) Don’t hesitate to answer the door when Jesus knocks.
