WAYCROSS — Mr. Mack Petty, 83, passed away suddenly Sunday, August 23, 2026, at his residence in Waycross.
He was born in Waycross to the late Ed Petty and Sadie Bell Steedley Petty. He was raised in Manor where he graduated from Manor High School in 1960. Following graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force. He retired from the General Motors Assembly Plant in Doraville, Ga., after 32 years of employment.
Petty had served as a bailiff with the Ware County Sheriff’s Office for the past 29 years at the Ware County Courthouse. He was also a member of the Waycross Exchange Club and was a former member of the Jaycees in Gwinnett County.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by six siblings.
Above all, Petty loved his growing family and prioritized them first in all he did.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Merlene Lewis Petty of Waycross; two children, Holli Petty Huelfer (Evan) of Tyrone, Ga., and Edward Scott Petty (Christie) of Waycross; seven grandchildren, Evan “Drew” Huelfer Jr. (Kathryn), Abigail Bjelcevic (Stefan), Lily Huelfer, Walker Petty, Harper Petty, Lizzie Petty, and Anna Petty; two great grandchildren, Evan Huelfer III and Ellis Huelfer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held August 27 at Central Baptist Church. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery.
