Brantley County commissioners discussed/ voted the following agenda items during the Tuesday, August 4 work session and Thursday, August 6 regular meeting.
• Payment to Golden Isles Collision for the Waynesville Volunteer Fire Department’s 2025 F250: Commissioners unanimously approved a payment of $12,135 for the truck damaged during the Hwy. 82 Fire to Golden Isle’s Collision on a motion by Commissioner Andy Riggins. Commissioner Brian Hendrix gave the second.
The monies will be paid out of the Waynesville VFD Repair and Maintenance budget.
• Software for online warrants for the Magistrate judge: The board unanimously approved the motion of Commissioner Randy Davison and a second by Commissioner Hendrix to purchase software requested by the Magistrate judge for online warrants from i3 Verticals at a price of $10,000. Funding will be paid out of the Magistrate judge’s Operations budget.
• Purchase of two scoreboards for Rec Department: Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase of two scoreboards to replace older models for the sports complex from ElectroMet for $13,901.20 with Commissioner Hal Herndon making the motion and Commissioner Davison giving the second.
Funding will be paid out of a SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) account.
• Maintenance agreement with Stryker for EMS: The board unanimously approved the motion of Commission Riggins and a second by Commissioner Hendrix for the continuation of a maintenance agreement with Stryker for EMS at a cost of $16,458.88.
The funding will be paid for from opioid funds.
According to County Manager Joey Cason, there is still about $80,000 left in the account.
“We also use money out of that opioid fund to help the Sheriff’s Department with their annual Junior Police Academy,” said Cason.
• Bid for foam insulation for the new building at the Rec Department: Commissioners unanimously approved the motion of Commissioner Hendrix to award the bid of $45,878.89 to Sanders Insulation for $45,878.89 to provide foam insulation in the new building at the Rec Department.
The funding will be paid out of SPLOST funds.
• Purchase of Pumper truck for Hoboken VFD: On a motion by Commissioner Hendrix and a second by Commissioner Herndon, the board unanimously approved a $190,000 request by the Hoboken Volunteer Fire Department to purchase a 2008 Crimson International pumper from Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus in Union Grove, Ala.
The purchase will be paid out of the HVFD budget.
• Purchase of a Brush truck for Hoboken VFD: Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase of a 2026 F350 Super Duty brush truck for the Hoboken VFD for $71,131 from Robbie Robinson Ford in Waycross on a motion by Commissioner Davison and a second by Commissioner Hendrix.
The monies will be paid for out of the HVFD budget.
• Resolution for Georgia Trees Act: The county manager informed commissioners they needed to pass a resolution for the Georgia Trees Act, so Brantley County can receive the money set aside by the state of Georgia for Brantley County in the Trees Act.
Commissioner Hendrix made the motion to pass the resolution with Commissioner Davison giving the second. The motion passed unanimously.
According to Cason, the funding is approximately $122,000. The act was passed to provide for support for Hurricane Helene.
• Variance for event center located at 9014 Central Ave., Waycross: Cason sought a motion to approve the recommendation from the Planning Commission to approve a variance for an event center located at 9014 Central Avenue, the former site of The Refinery Church.
“It’s going to be a business where they’re going to run an event center out there,” explained the county manager.
Commissioner Herndon made the motion with Commissioner Hendrix giving the second. The motion unanimously passed.
