Nathaniel McGauley entered into eternal rest Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
He was born on October 26, 1938, to Major McGauley Sr. and Mary Hellen McGauley. He lived a life marked by quiet strength, wisdom, dignity, hard work and service to others.
He graduated from Lee Street School, proudly known as the home of the Mighty Hornets. Following graduation, he continued his education at Okefenokee Technical School, where he pursued a degree in electronics and nurtured his lifelong passion for electronics and technology.
He was a hardworking and devoted electrician who dedicated 35 years of service to Gilman Paper, Inc. in St. Marys. Throughout his career, he was known for his knowledge, dependability and strong work ethic. His dedication to his profession was a reflection of the commitment and determination with which he approached every aspect of his life.
He also had a heart for his community and understood the importance of service, leadership and fellowship. He was one of the original organizers of the Consolidated Men’s Club. He was also a member of the Pierce County NAACP and the 100 Black Men of Southeast Georgia.
Throughout the years, he became a respected source of wisdom, knowledge and guidance within his community. He carried himself in a quiet and dignified manner, yet his presence spoke volumes. He was always willing to share the knowledge and wisdom he had gained throughout his life with anyone willing to listen. His words, experiences, and guidance became invaluable gifts to those who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Elden McGauley; his step-son, Dale Gibson; his parents, Major McGauley Sr. and Mary Hellen McGauley and his siblings, Major McGauley, Jr., Margaret “Susie” Jackson, Ann Whitehead, Lee Henry McGauley, twins, Johnell McGauley and Carnell Young, Mae Pearl Bircham, Eloise Jefferson, Martha Stewart, Simon McGauley and Harold McGauley.
He leaves a lifetime of precious memories to be cherished by his loving children: daughters, Cam Johnson and Synthia Odenyo; sons, Stanley “Neal” McGauley, Roderick McGauley, and Micheal White; his loving sister, Gloria McGauley Wesley, Waycross; his loving brother, Dewey McGauley, Blackshear and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
"Though Nathaniel will be deeply missed, he leaves our hearts filled with the love he gave, the laughter we shared, and the unforgettable stories that will be told for generations to come. His cherished wisdom and wealth of knowledge were gifts he freely shared with anyone who was willing to listen and learn. While his earthly journey has come to an end, Nathaniel’s influence will continue to live through his family, his community, and every life he touched. We will forever be grateful for the years we were blessed to share with him, the lessons he taught us, and the beautiful memories that will remain forever in our hearts," said his family.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home, 505 Ware Street, Blackshear.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, from the Fourth Mount Olive Church, 900 Yeomans Street, Blackshear.
