Pierce County captured three of its four volleyball matches with a split on the road and a sweep at home to even its season mark.
The Lady Bears (4-4 overall, 1-0 Region 3AAA) played Tuesday, August 18 at Glynn Academy along with Savannah Christian. PCHS rallied to beat the Lady Terrors 13-25, 25-23, 1614. The Lady Raiders posted a 25-11, 25-12 victory.
Pierce County hosted Cook and region foe Beach Thursday, August 20 sweeping both. The Lady Bears knocked off the Lady Hornets 25-12, 25-22 and followed with a 25-3, 25-8 decision against the Lady Bulldogs.
PCHS traveled Tuesday, August 25 to Adel to meet up with host Cook and Crisp County. The Lady Bears travel Thursday, August 27 to Savannah to play region foe Johnson and Bradwell Institute.
Pierce County will play in the Crisp County tournament Saturday, August 29. A trip to West Laurens is on tap Tuesday, September 1 with Veterans also playing.
Lady Bears...13-25-16 Glynn Acad..25-23-14 BRUNSWICK — Pierce County gained its revenge on the Lady Terrors, who won the first meeting of the season in three sets in Bearville.
Glynn Academy controlled the first set racing out to an 18-7 advantage en route to the 12-point win. In the second set, the Lady Bears pulled away from a 19-all tie to force a deciding set.
PCHS scored the final two points in the third set to escape with the win.
“We got some big blocks from (Addyson) Echols, (Zayleigh) Raithel, (Isabella) Marx and (Mollie) Carter,” said head coach Robbie Spires of the second set victory. “(Azalea) Mobley, (Nylah) Jackson, Raithel and Marx had several hard hit attacks supported by timely and well placed tips by Echols.”
Sav. Christian ..25-25 Lady Bears........11-12 BRUNSWICK — Savannah Christian dominated from the outset to get the sweep of the Lady Bears.
“Savannah Christian was a typical private school team — tall athletic girls who play together year round,” said Spires. “We brought a lot of energy to the court, but were just outmanned by the tall strong outside hitters of SCPS. We could only manage to get single points at a time to their long runs.”
Lady Bears.......25-25 Cook.................12-22 BEARVILLE — PCHS took control early with the first set win and then had to rally in the second set for the victory.
A 13-point run behind the serving of Heidi Hodges gave the Lady Bears the momentum in the first set.
“(Ansley) Hutcheson and (Daisy) Thigpen did a good job of distributing sets between all the hitters,” Spires said. “Our serves were just too much for Cook.
“In the second set, we struggled finishing plays and let them (Lady Hornets) get momentum for most of the set. We actually were behind most of the match and had to scratch and fight and really create some plays.”
Lady Bears.......25-25 Beach ..................3-8 BEARVILLE — The Lady Bears stormed past the late-arriving Beach team for the sweep.
PCHS scored the first eight points before the Lady Bulldogs got on the “I challenged the team to set a goal of no more than five points allowed in the second set,” said Spires. “We fell just a little short. It was good to get the first region win.”
