WAYCROSS — Mr. Hugh Lamar Matthews, 82, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2026, at his residence in Waycross following an extended illness.

He was born in Charleston, S.C., to the late Lamar Matthews and Vader Hooks Wright. He retired as a compositor for the Waycross Journal-Herald after many years of dedicated employment and was a member of Ware Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon. He also served in the United States Army.

Matthews will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family and friends. He especially enj oyed spending time at his river house on the Satilla River, where he loved to fish and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. He also loved riding horses, playing checkers with Billy and Devan, and simply sitting on the porch in the afternoon, enjoying the company of those he loved and the simple pleasures of life.

In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by two children, Ricky Matthews and Hugh Lamar Matthews, Jr.

He is survived by three children, Candice Dean (Ben Selden), Brandy Matthews, and Rebecca Matthews, all of Waycross; seven grandchildren, Devan Morgan, Dylan Morgan, Billy Roberson, Jr. (Cheyne Johns), Tristen Dziepak, Amelia Hiott (Taten McBee), Reagan Hiott, and Coreyanna Steverson; numerous great grandchildren; a brother, James Hooks of Waycross; a sister, Julie Heiser of Charleston, S.C.; his former wife, Laverne Matthews of Waycross; and two special friends, Kathy Aldridge of Waycross and Tyler McBee.

A memorial service was held August 15 at the Music Funeral Home Chapel.
