ST. MARYS — Mr. James Edwin Peavy, Jr., 72, passed away peacefully Monday, August 10, 2026, in St. Marys, following an extended illness.

Peavy was born in Waycross to the late Judge James Edwin Peavy and Carolyn Beasley Peavy. He graduated from Southwood High School and attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus. He retired from CSX Transportation in 2015 and moved to St. Marys in 2019. Peavy was an avid fan of the University of Georgia Bulldogs and Jacksonville Jaguars, and enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Caron Smith Peavy of St. Marys; a sister, Julie Peavy Hopkins (Joe) of Folkston; a stepson, Jason Thomas Cornelison of St. Augustine, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Tracy Cornelison Quarles (Robby) and Wendy Cornelison Blackwell (Stacy), both of Dalton, Ga.; a granddaughter, Prudence Rose Cornelison of St. Augustina; a nephew, Alva Joseph Hopkins IV of Macon; a niece, Melissa Hopkins Johnson (Greg) of St. Simons Island; and three great nephews, Ronald Gregory Johnson III, Joseph Edwin Johnson, and Hank Alexander Johnson, all of St. Simons Island.

A funeral service was August 15 at St. Marys Methodist Church followed by a graveside service at Oakland Cemetery in Waycross.
