TIFTON — Pierce County’s Lady Bears volleyball team split two matches here Tuesday, beating Tift County and falling to Valdosta.
PCHS (1-3) had a second match in Brooklet at Southeast Bulloch High School canceled Thursday, August 13 after a storm in the Bulloch County area knocked out power at SEB. The match against the Lady Yellow Jackets and Faith Christian has been rescheduled for Monday, September 21.
The Lady Bears traveled Tuesday, August 18 to Brunswick to face host Glynn Academy and Savannah Christian. Pierce County is scheduled to host Region 3AAA mate Beach and Cook Thursday, August 20 with action beginning at 4 p.m. for jayvee and 5 p.m. for varsity.
PCHS travels Tuesday, August 25 to Adel to face Cook and Crisp County. The Lady Bears go to Savannah Thursday, August 27 for a region match with Johnson and a non-region matchup with Bradwell Institute.
Pierce County knocked off Tift County in the first match Tuesday downing the Lady Blue Devils 25-16 and 25-15.
“We played solid,” said head coach Robbie Spires of the matchup. “Our defense was better than it was in our opening matches. We did a good job of serving the ball and really just controlled the match.”
Isabell Marx led the team in kills with nine and was second in digs with 11. Azalea Mobley had 12 digs with Gracie Brewer and Heidi Hodges recording nine and eight respectively.
Molly Carter finished with two kills while Zayleigh Raithel had one kill and two blocks. Ansley Hutcheson had a team-high seven assists while Daisy Thigpen finished with four.
PCHS fell in the second match to Valdosta losing 2520 and 25-9.
“We overcame a 16-7 deficit, but couldn’t get over the hump,” Spires said. “We spent a lot of energy in the first set to get back in the match. Valdosta had a lot of good hitters and setters. They have a quick attack .. it’s a fast offense we hadn’t seen.”
Mobley led in the digs category finishing with seven. Marx had six digs and added four kills. Hutcheson recorded five assists with Thigpen picking up four.
Pierce County JV squad lost its first two matches of the year against visiting Glynn Academy falling 25-23 and 25-20 in the first match. The Lady Terrors claimed the second match winning 25-10, 25-11.
Kennadi Sikes and Mazi McKendree were recognized for their play on offense and defense. Wynn Hodges drew praise as setter and with her serving.
