A revised tax abatement schedule for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility in Patterson was approved at the August 12 meeting of the Pierce County Tax Assessor Board, though many present in the audience were concerned with more than just tax breaks for Grenergy, the company behind the possible investment.
The 9 a.m. meeting took place at the Pierce County Courthouse Annex on Nichols Street and soon evolved into an open forum for concerned community members, many of whom had only recently learned of the proposed facility. At one point, the back and to even drew Chairman Neal Bennett, present initially just as a spectator, into the conversation.
The official purpose of the meeting was just to determine if proposed adjustments to a tax abatement schedule had been accepted by Grenergy and now met with the tax assessor board’s approval.
