Waycross is seeking a Finance Director following the resignation last month of Greg Smith.
Smith’s last day was Wednesday, August 5, he said. He began his tenure with the city in March 2022.
A Certified Public Accountant, Smith said he’s transitioning into the role of an independent contractor, handling acc ounting, taxes and auditing for businesses, municipalities, and nonp rofit organizations.
“Pretty much what I was doing before,” said Smith, who holds two degrees from the University of Georgia and another from Liberty University in financial-related disciplines.
He said he’ll remain in Waycross, but will be “traveling a lot” to service clients in other locations.
“We’re grateful for the work that Director Smith was able to get accomplished during his tenure with the City of Waycross,” Mayor Michale-Angelo James said. “We wish him continued success as he extends his financial reach into more territories.”
Smith, who’d been a member of the team that had audited the city’s financials numerous years before taking the director’s post, said he appreciated the opportunity to be in a city’s day-to-day operation. He said its benefits will serve him well in the future.
“It was a great experience,” he said. “The continuing education they sent me to and the networking from that was great.”
Smith was a manager with BYRT CPAs, LLC, which has served as the city’s auditor, in 2006-15. Before that, he was Chief Financial Officer for Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton in 1999-2005. He was CFO for Satilla Health Services in Waycross in 1989-99.
Smith, who became a CPA in 1983, replaced China Agu, who resigned the post in January 2022 after three years to take a similar job in Doraville, Ga.
The city has posted the vacancy on its website. Minimum qualifications listed include a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting/ finance with a Masters in business administration preferred; two-five years of governmental accounting experience and three-five years of management experience with increasing responsibilities; excellent financial, analytical, and strategy development skills; and the ability to be bonded.
