BCHS travels to Alamo to battle Wheeler, Butler in last jamboree
CANEY BAY — Brantley County will finish out its pre-season Friday night when the Herons travel to Wheeler County for a three-team jamboree against the Bulldogs and Butler of Augusta.
BCHS opened in Folkston participating a three-team jamboree against host Charlton County and Rutland out of Macon garnering a split in the two quarters of action against both schools in firstyear head coach Matt Hickox’s debut.
The Herons blanked Rutland 13-0 before falling to the Indians, 9-0, in the August 8 scrimmage.
“We did not play bad on the defensive side of the ball,” said Hickox of the fourquarter outing. “There are some things we have to clean up. Offensively, Charlton County just flat out bullied us.”
Brantley County’s two touchdowns against the Hurricanes came via a sixyard run by Tallan Collins and a 24-yard gallop by Malachi Saunders. The Herons finished the game with 78 yards rushing and added 78 yards passing completing 4-of-10 attempts.
“We were able to move the ball against Rutland,” Hickox said. “Against Charlton, we were tired and struggled.”
The Indians and Hurricanes opened the night with two quarters. Rutland and the Herons squared off in the middle two quarters with BCHS and Charlton County playing the final two periods.
“Offensively, we’ve got to do a better job of coming off the ball,” Hickox said of his observation from the four quarters. “We’ve got to be more physical at the point of attack. We’ve also got to improve at catching the ball.
“On the positive side, Tallan ran the ball hard. Zary (Harris) had a long catch in his first action. Moving forward, we’ve got to play with a sense of urgency.
“Defensively, we’ve got to play more downhill. We’ve got to be sound in setting the edge and we’ve got to do a better job on the back end (secondary) of the defense. Consistency and being physical at the point of attack is going to be our (coaches) point of emphasis this week.”
Hickox said the team gathered Sunday and watched film of the scrimmage with coaches pointing out mistakes to a receptive squad.
“Most are quick fixes while some were just mental breakdowns as we wore down,” he stated.
As for the jamboree in Alamo, Hickox said Butler will bring in a big-sized squad. Host Wheeler County, a team he saw during an OTA at Atkinson County, has a goodlooking squad.
“Our (coaches) focus is us this week,” said Hickox. “We want to make corrections and work on us.”
Brantley County kicks off the 2026 campaign August 21 in Alma against Bacon County at 7:30 p.m.
