Construction of a new Pierce County Food Pantry took a big step toward becoming a reality at last week's county commission meeting.
The board approved submitting an application for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the construction of a new food pantry.
The commission approved McCall and Associates of Valdosta as the architect for the project. During a recent assessment, McCall and Associates scored highest. The other bidder was Roberts Civil Engineering of Blackshear.
The commission also approved a resolution declaring there are no conflicts of interest with the project, which is standard when applying for a CDBG grant.
www.theblacksheartimes.com Plans call for the facility to be constructed on property the county already owns on Grady Street at the site of the old Grady Street School.
“This is something we’ve needed for a long time. There is a desperate need for cooler space and space for staple goods,” said County Chairman Neal Bennett.
The Food Pantry is currently housed in the Pierce County Senior Center on Carter Avenue in Blackshear. However, the food pantry frequently lacks adequate space for food storage and food distribution.
CDBG grants are generally awarded in the fall by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
