Pierce County took the first baby steps toward creating its very own airport at last week’s county commission meeting.
The county approved transferring a 4.401 acre lot of land to the City of Patterson for the purpose of building an airport.
Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls said Patterson Mayor Dedi Thomas had contacted him about the possibility of the city getting the tract.
The county was deeded the land as a gift in 2006 from David Herrin.
Sauls said his conversation with Thomas led to Tuesday night’s agenda item.
“This is about economic development. Every county and city that is growing has access to an airport and we don’t have one,” Thomas said. “We’ve got a long way to go, but it is a start.”
Thomas said the 4.4 acre tract will be one of two options under consideration. He did not elaborate on the second option.
The 4.4 acre tract is located right behind the old Georgia Forestry Commission site the city gained ownership of about two years ago. The city obtained the location on Georgia Highway 32 East from the Georgia Forestry Commission.
The tract transferred to Patterson adjoins the forestry commission site and already contains an airstrip and a hangar, though both are in disrepair.
The property is valued at about $25,000.
The vote to approve the transfer of the land was unanimous.
