Downtown Waycross has welcomed a new business to the fold: Mollie’s Place, a new children’s clothing store at 402 Plant Avenue The store is the brainchild of sisters Riley Spurlock and Madelyn Tanner. According to Spurlock, the idea their own business came about late last year.
“I was back in Statesboro for school, in around October, November, we started talking about me coming back here and us starting a business.”
Spurlock went on to explain that, while shopping for Tanner’s then-unborn daughter, Mollie, the pair realized there were only so many options available for kid’s clothing in the area.
“She and her husband walked out of a children’s clothing store in Statesboro, and they were like ‘You know, we could do something like this in Waycross!’” she recalled.
After some thought and prayers, the pair ultimately chose to create Mollie’s Place around January of this year. But the business is more than just a source of revenue.
It also is a way for the sisters to honor their late mother, Mollie Vickery Spurlock, for whom the store is named.
“We were trying to find a way to honor our mom,” Tanner said. “We wanted to do something together so we could honor her memory... and give back to the community the way she did.”
The store’s logo incorporates two mementos of their mother: a butterfly and a giraffe.
“The butterfly is one of the main things we remember Mom with,” Spurlock explained. “The day of her life celebration, we saw butterflies everywhere ... it’s just been our sign of remembering her.”
Giraffes also were a favorite animal of their mother, they said.
“Everything we do, we pray over it and we do it with intention and love. We try to be very diligent and pay attention to detail... and that everybody feels welcome and loved, because that’s the effect that Mom had on everybody that she met.”
Mollie’s Place offers clothes for children across a broad age range: for girls, ages newborn to 7-8, and for boys, newborn to 10-12.
In addition to clothing, the store offers custom embroidery as well as a shower registry.
The store already has had a soft opening, with a grand opening to be announced.
Mollie’s Place is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
