As 811 Day (August 11) approaches, Georgia 811 reminds everyone that whether you’re planting a tree, installing a mailbox, building a fence, or tackling a major construction project, one simple step can make all the difference: And Georgia 811 says they have heard it all when it comes to reasons why people don’t call before they dig.
“I’ve been digging here for years without a problem. I know where my utilities are - I was here when they were installed. I’m on a farm, so I don’t need a dig ticket. I’m not digging very deep. These are some of the most common reasons people give for not contacting 811 before digging,” says Megan Estes, Director of Corporate Communications at Georgia 811. “The reality is that every digging project is different. A locate request isn’t” a one-time permit - it’s valid for one specific location, one specific type of work and for only 30 days. If the location changes or the scope of the project changes, you’ll need a new ticket. It’s every dig, every time.”
Georgia law requires anyone planning to dig to contact Georgia 811 at least three business days before beginning work. After a ticket is submitted, Georgia 811 notifies the utility companies that may have underground facilities in the area. Those utility companies then send professional locators to mark the approximate location of their underground lines using paint, flags or both.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that Georgia 811 locates underground utilities,” Estes says. 'Our role is to notify the affected utility companies. They are responsible for sending their locate technicians to mark their facilities.”
Before breaking ground, those digging should verify that all notified utility companies have responded to the ticket. Using the ticket number, homeowners and contractors can check ticket responses online or through the Georgia 811 mobile app to confirm whether utilities have marked their lines.
