The new 2026-2027 school year is almost here for Pierce County Schools. The first day of school for students is next Wenesday, August 5.
Sheriff Ramsey Bennett would like to remind each parent/ guardian to talk to their child about basic safety, including how to handle strangers, who to go to if they need help and to not be a bully or make threats. Parents/ Guardians are also asked to talk to them about social media and internet safety.
Bennett recommends that if you see something suspicious, then say something. You can report what you see to the school resource officer, call 9-1-1 and/or report to a teacher/principal.
Cell Phone Safety Tips for Parents:
• Set limits on what your child can do on their cell phones (who they can talk to; when, what to post etc).
• Talk with your child about the consequences for sexting and cyberbullying.
• Tell your child to remember that what he/she posts or sends/texts online (pictures or messages) remains in cyberspace forever, even on SNAPCHAT
• Tell your child to report bullying of any kind (through internet, cell phone, in person, at school). Do not let anyone get bullied and don't be the bully.
• Inform your child - Do not take or forward inappropriate pictures or videos to ANYONE.
• Make sure your child knows to have privacy settings and not share their locations with just anyone (and turn off location when taking pictures).
• Remind your child to never agree to meet face to face with someone they've met online or send them pictures.
• Remind your child to never respond to messages that have bad words, seem scary or just weird.
• Remind them to also never to enter an area that charges for services without asking you first.
• Most of all - remind them to talk with you and ask for help.
