(The E-911 Advisory Committee discussed and/or voted on the following during their regular, quarterly meeting Wednesday, July 22. ) Computer assisted dispatching (CAD): The advisory committee discussed the need for purchasing a new computer-aided dispatch (CAD) for the Pierce County 911 Center. CAD is software used by 911 centers, sheriff’s offices, police and fire departments and emergency medical services to manage emergency calls. It logs incidents, identifies caller locations and keeps a record of calls. It was pointed out a constitutional amendment will be on the general election ballot November 3 creating a Georgia Next Generation 9-1-1 Fund. The 911 fund will dedicate the monthly $1.50 fee collected on phone lines to be used for statewide 911 maintenance and technology transitions rather than local general funds. Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls, chairman of the advisory committee, said he wanted to wait and see if the amendment is approved. If so, the county would be able to use the 911 fund to pay for the new CAD system without spending money from the local budget.
“I want to do what is in the best interest of the taxpayers while still giving everyone what is needed,” he said.
Emergency policies: Each department is still updating its standard operating procedures (SOP). Once approved by the committee, the SOPs will be forwarded to the county commission for final approval.
Next meeting: The next quarterly meeting of the advisory committee will be held at 2 p.m. October 28 at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center in Blackshear.
