(The Pierce County Board of Commissioners discussed and/or voted on the following during their regular meeting Tuesday, July 7.)
Yeomans and Ware Street parking lot projects: The Scruggs Company of Valdosta was approved for the parking lot project at the recreation department. Scruggs bid $263,267.10 on the project.
Conditional use permit for 3191 Midway Church Road: Commissioners approved a conditional use permit 3191 Midway Church Road to allow for a childcare center. A public hearing was held prior to the meeting. No citizens spoke during the hearing. The planning commission had recommended the permit be approved by the county commission.
Public comment session: Ala Mae Myles of Patterson requested improvements be made to her road, Ala Mae Lane. Myles has appeared frequently at the podium at county commission meetings to ask that crush and run be applied, trees cutback from the right-ofway and dirt be hauled in to build up the roadway. She asked a friend, Kanisha Jones, to help her with her presentation. Commissioners have repeatedly declined Myles’ requests because the road is not county maintained. Jones asked for the specific process for having Ala Mae Lane accepted as a county road. County Chairman Neal Bennett gave Myles and Jones information on the process of requesting the road become a county road, including obtaining a 60 foot right-of-way easement.
Recreation teams recognized: Commissioners recognized the 10U girls machine pitch softball team and the 8U boys coach pitch baseball teams. The girls team was the district winner and state runners-up in softball and the boys were the district winners and placed fourth in the state in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s competition.
County manager report: Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls gave a lengthy report on his activities and meetings over the past month. Sauls gave detailed information on tax assessments, the floating optional sales tax and the local homestead sales tax. He also gave reports from individual departments including 911, magistrate court, clerk of superior court, emergency medical services, planning and facilities, road department and recreation department.
Invocation leader: The Rev. John Williams, pastor of the Blackshear Church of God, led the invocation at the meeting.
Pledge leader: JP Ponce, infantryman in the Marine Corps, led the pledge of allegiance at the meeting.
Next meeting: The next regular commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center in Blackshear.

New School Road project: Commissioners approved The Scruggs Company of Valdosta for the local maintenance improvement grant for resurfacing New School Road. Scruggs will be paid $373,984.73. They were not the low bidder, however. East Coast Asphalt was the low bidder at $373,334.92 of Douglas, but commissioners opted to go with Scruggs due to time constraints. Hofstadter and Associates, Inc. of Macon recommended either company. Other companies submitting bids were Thrift Brothers at $401,525.68.
