DFACS needs more $$$
Editor, The Times, Recently my two grandbabies, ages one year old and two months old were placed in foster care. They and their parents are both in Blackshear.
Neither child was physically, mentally or emotionally abused nor neglected. The parents and in-laws didn’t get along which the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFACS) apparently deems to be emotional abuse.
The mother was breast feeding the newborn and the newborn recently had surgery after a rough pregnancy.
Now, DFACS is refusing to allow the parents to visit with their children due to lack of money according to the DFACS Supervisor. The parents were told: “It’s not in the budget.”
The children are expected to be in foster care for one year and if their demands aren’t met, the babies will be adopted out according to a statement by one of the caseworkers.
This deeply affects children. Families are out right being told there’s no money to allow for visits. Maintaining connection is so important for childrens’ development.
How many more children in foster care are out there feeling their parents have forgotten them? How many parents are hurting from not seeing their children? How is this helping families when the goal is reunification?
The budget cuts are affecting so many foster children and their families in many ways.
This is not the way we should be caring for the youngest and most vulnerable in our society — our children.
