Waycross, Rural King and the Ware Childrens Intiative will hold a Hurricane Prep Rally emergency preparedness event from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 25 in the Rural King parking lot, 2215 Memorial Drive.
The morning program will help attendees be better prepared for hurricane season, which began June 1 and continues through the end of November, Waycross City Manager Ulysses “Duke” Rayford said. The area has been hit with remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms multiple times over the past few years causing a variety of damage to property and hardships for residents.
The event will include experts on aspects of emergency preparedness to better help the community cope with emergencies and disasters resulting from a weather event. Attendees can learn the steps to follow before, during and after a weather emergency.
Waycross City Commissioners discussed aspects of the rally during their planning and information session Monday, July 20.
Among those were:
• Emergency operations during a declared local emergency;
• Curfew implementation and enforcement considerations;
• Emergency distribution points, including City Hall and designated fire stations;
• Daily public information
briefings and community communications;
• Emergency shelter coordination and provisions;
• Power outage mitigation operations and how city services are prioritized when electrical power is unavailable.
Saturday’s rally is a family-friendly event that will have activities for children. All businesses and organizations with pertinent information to pass on to residents related to emergency preparedness are encouraged to have a presence as the rally by calling the Waycross City Hall at (912) 287-2900 to be included.
