A Waycross man wanted on three counts of aggravated assault and another of criminal damage to property was arrested last week following a car chase with Waycross Police Department officers, the WPD said.
Ivan Velasquez, 21, of the 1800 block of Ball Street, was arr ested Wednesday, July 15 in the yard of a home in the 1500 block of Carswell Avenue, after fleeing an officer attempting to make a traffic stop. Velasquez was wanted after the four felony warrants were obtained for him as a suspect in connection to a shooting July 13 in the 1600 block of Madison Street, authorities said.
A shotgun had been discharged that night into a house and parked vehicle on Madison Street, they said.
About 6:46 p.m., July 15, Velasquez was viewed driving a white 2018 Nissan Altima by authorities monitoring traffic. Velazquez was traveling north on the Haines Avenue overpass at the time he was seen.
Officers attempted to stop Velazquez after he turned onto Garlington Avenue from the South Georgia Parkway, the incident report said. Velazquez ignored the sirens and lights activated on the police vehicle and continued to the intersection of Garlington Avenue and Carswell Avenue where he turned left.
Shortly thereafter, the vehicle Velazquez was driving turned into the residence on Carswell Avenue where he was apprehended without incident.
Velazquez was transported to the Ware County Jail, where he was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and failure to maintain lane related to the chase.
He also was informed of the four other charges in connection to the shooting, authorities said.
In that incident, WPD personnel responded about 8:57 p.m. to a report of a shooting at a residence on Madison Street.
The investigation revealed an individual had discharged a shotgun into both a residence and a parked vehicle, authorities said.
No injuries were reported. As a result of the following investigation, the suspect in the shooting was identified as Velazquez, who was subsequently named in warrants charging him with the four felonies.
Valazquez remains in the Ware County Jail after having his bond denied by a magistrate.
